Chemical Peels for Treating Acne

By Marlene Ataine

Almost every teenager has suffered acne at some point, in some it can be mild with just a few pimples or "zits" occurring every so often. However acne can be more severe in other teenagers, giving rise to spots called whiteheads, blackheads, and in more severe cases larger red, inflamed spots called cysts. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

Although acne does not pose any danger, it can result in scarring of the skin. The pores (tiny holes) in human skin are connected to oil glands underneath it. The glands are connected to the pores via follicles - small canals. An oily liquid called sebum is produced in these glands. Dead skin cells are brought to the surface of the skin by the sebum carrying them through the follicles. From each follicle a small hair grows through the skin. When these follicles get blocked, oil accumulates under the skin and pimples develop. Acne is common in teenagers as the hormonal changes during puberty can cause excess oils in the skin. However it is not just teenagers who suffer from acne, adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne.

For some adults, breakouts are a result of hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones). But an imbalance in both male and female hormones (estrogen) can also cause breakouts. During pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause, this can happen to women. Some medications, such as corticosteroids, and cosmetics can also contribute to the development of acne.

Chemical peels are a very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne. By exfoliating the skin, chemical peels take effect; this removes dead skin cells which have clogged the pores, and cleanses the skin of the dirt. This causes fewer acne pimples and spots to form. In addition, chemical peels can take away some of the uneven skin tone and skin discolouration that acne causes.

For acne treatment, chemical peels are a very cost effective option. They are also a very safe treatment for acne. The top layers of the skin are exfoliated and cleansed by superficial chemical skin peels that remove all the dead skin cells. A course of six peels, spaced apart by one week minimum, is usually recommended. With this method, you will notice the skin texture improves and the amount of acne breakouts is visibly reduced.

Only a credible skin care clinic should be approached for your acne treatment chemical peel. Before embarking on treatment with chemical peels for acne, it is important to consult a reputable clinic to obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type.
