Vitamin B12 for Weight Loss

By Anne Hastings Fennell

Vitamin B12 has long been known to play an important role in the monitoring and maintaining of body functions. This vitamin is of the water soluble variety, and is crucial for higher brain and nervous system function, and blood formation. Eight B vitamins are naturally found inside the human body, including of course, B12. DNA formation inside the body's cellular system uses this vitamin as well, and energy production is also increased by it. Vitamin B12 is a popular ingredient in anti-aging creams, since a lack of the vitamin in the body contributes to the aging of skin. It is available in injection form, as a stand-alone topical product and as an ingredient in many anti-aging creams.

A surprising discovery, however, has also linked Vitamin B12 and weight loss.

This shedding of weight is not the result of Vitamin B12 alone. However, the vitamin is able to help you reach your weight loss goals by improving your metabolism. Metabolizing proteins and fats is a main function of B12. Energy is increased by this, so exercise is much easier and weight loss is a result of getting active. Some people gain weight quickly, and B12 is agreed by many to decelerate this process. Studies have shown that those who are deficient in Vitamin B12 are more likely to be obese compared to those who don't, as the latter group have more energy.

Another advantage of injectable B12 is that stress levels are reported to be reduced. The benefits for those taking B12 that are out of shape, are much higher than what they do for a person who is already in an optimal physical form. A B12 shot may be what you need if your body is feeling like it is running less than optimally, and need extra energy.

While you can experience the effects of Vitamin B12 and reducing weight by adding more food rich in the vitamin in your diet, you will need a lot of this vitamin to experience this effect. As such, most people prefer to take Vitamin B12 injections in order to boost their metabolism, as the nutrients will be absorbed by the body more effectively as compared to pills. In most cases, it's every 2 or 4 weeks that the injections are delivered, but each patient and physician can work out the timing that is best in an individual's case.

What Safety Concerns are There?

It's a good idea to consult with a doctor before you get this treatment so you can be sure that your health won't be put at risk because of the shots.

In some cases, B12 injections can have side effects, like other kinds of injection procedures. Nausea, vomiting, headaches, diarrhea, palpitations, and pain near the area of injection are reported occasionally.

B12 give a lot of people a lot of energy, and that is the main point of doing this. This generally helps people to maintain their diets, and motivates them to exercise and increase physical activity. Stress and depression are common for those who have major weight gain issues, and these shots can make these symptoms less prominent.
