Make the Most of your Botox Experience

By Craig W. Nevilt

It may have been a recommendation from a friend, or a trusted colleague that solidified your position. Or maybe you saw an attractive ad or article about the benefits of Botox. Whatever it was, got you to this point. Now, it's up to you to prepare yourself for you Botox appointment. The best way you can prepare for Botox is to inform yourself on what the procedure entails. They are not complicated or lengthy procedures, so understanding the mechanics and results of a procedure are pretty straightforward. Knowing what to expect is the best way to insure your comfort and success as you prepare to use Botox to eliminate unsightly wrinkles or for one of its many other uses.

Since the procedure is very straightforward, and there is little preparation in terms of medical needs, try to be prepared with your expectations. Likely, once with your doctor, nurse, or certified staff member, you will be asked to sit in a reclining, dentist-like chair. When you know what you want, it will make the procedure more meaningful for you. You will be an active participant. So, you tell your physician you want to achieve this look, and then they may ask you to contract specific muscles, then he or she will mark the injection locations.

Your Face After the Procedure

The affected area may show small red dots right after you receive the Botox injections. In rare cases, some patients reported instances of minor bruising or swelling. If that were the case, the simple application of make-up would cover that up until the bruising disappeared. This would likely occur within a few hours of the Botox treatment. Since this is a non-surgical procedure, facial scars are not a concern. To speed up the healing process, doctors recommend holding a cold washcloth to the injection site for a few minutes after the procedure.

Your doctor should provide you with Botox recovery tips after your Botox procedure has been completed. The Botox will take effect within the first few hours with full results visible within about a week, so be sure to schedule your appointment far enough in advance of an event to enjoy its full effects by that time.

Botox Fees

Getting a procedure done is generally quite affordable, which is one of the main reasons for the procedure's ongoing popularity. Depending on the nature of the treatment, a BOTOX session will usually cost between $300 and $400 per syringe. Compared to other anti-wrinkle injectable treatments, only collagen will typically cost less than BOTOX. BOTOX patients will have to pay to maintain their results, normally around every 4-6 months.

Known Side Effects of Botox

Though very rare, Botox side effects do occur. Usually, they're temporary, but they can sometimes last for several months. The kinds of side effects depend on what area you had treated with Botox. For patients with frown lines, the most common Botox related side effects include:

▪ headache

▪ respiratory infection

▪ flu-like symptoms
